Environmental Engineering Degrees From Online College degree Programs Make Graduates Valuable In Green Technology Career Professions

The recent move towards a green economy is starting to take hold. Two recently published studies project the industrialization of restoring the planet could create over 800,000 new jobs by 2012. There’s a direct spin-off from this, too. Someone has to teach and train this new workforce. That’s the purview of the environmental science teacher.

These people can teach anywhere from vocational to university level. No matter what, the profession is primarily a post-secondary school position. One other common thing is that these educators have past work experience in the green industries. Fortunately, that can come from a number of different sources, from Brownfield and Superfund reclamation to environmental or sustainability management.

Probably the most important distinction between teachers and their other environmental peers is that they went back to school for their teaching certificate. Much of this is dependent on the state they live in, but this usually takes one to two years. After that, if one wants to particularly work on the college level, one also needs a minimum of an MS degree, although this is pretty much standard for anyone in the environmental sciences.

It should be noted that if one wants to teach at the university level, you can’t just become a full professor with just a teaching certification and master’s degree. Earning a full professorship involves getting a PhD. True, one can teach at an on campus or online college, but only as an assistant professor, and one’s classes will never go past the sophomore level. What one usually does in this situation is work on one’s doctoral dissertation and teach at the same time. The good news that the candidate ends up often getting some sort of reimbursement for the classes they teach.

Another advantage of a full professorship is having the opportunity to do one’s share of research. In fact, it’s usually one of the requirements of the job. Another is publishing, which if the research is relevant enough can turn into book and other media deals. This can turn into another way to considerably supplement one’s income.

There’s not much definitive data on these educators, due to it being so new. The Bureau of Labor Statistics announced they are now studying the specialty. So far, what they have released is that salary is in many ways dependent on what level of school one is teaching at, as well as experience level. That said, a typical salary is about $59,000 a year. Overall, they can be as little as $41,000 to over $85,000. Making $120,000 or more when you are in the top ten percent of this field is not uncommon.

Of course, there is one perk most other professions don‘t have: tenure. While not given as much as it used to be, with tenure one could end up with a job for life. That’s on top of such things as retirement and health benefits.

Still, most important, no one denies the planet needs its share of cleaning up. If the previously mentioned reports hold true, then those with their environmental health degree absolutely have to teach those 800,000 people who will be cleaning up the planet. As such, with online degree programs toward this degree, there not only is the possibility of getting a very forward-thinking career, but also one that comes with a lot of job satisfaction.
