Digital photography Exposure Tutorial
Preparing Pics for Print in Digital Photo Books
If you enjoy having a good time, you could do worse than sharing online photos with others.
So you’re ready to publish your first of what could become several digital photo books. Major obstacles such as the selection of your size, theme, and background are in your rear-view mirror. All systems appear to be a go, and you are surprised at the ease in which the project is unfolding. Then your high hopes are dashed by a message from your computer telling you your selected photographs do not make the grade to be printed. How does this compute?
Digital Photo Books
When you take a picture with a digital camera, the image becomes “digitized” – that means made up of hundreds of thousands of pixels, which are nothing more than tiny colored squares. The quality of a digital photograph is directly proportional to the density of pixels in the image. The more pixels or dots per inch, the higher the resolution and the better quality of your printed image.
Considerations re: digital photography
- Hundreds of thousands of color pixels make digitized images
- Some internet sites compress images without asking permission
- The more pixels per linear inch (PPI) the better the photo
There is a significant difference between what Internet photos will look like on your computer and how they look when downloaded, losing clarity in the downloading process. The speed in which smaller images are downloaded greatly exceeds that of larger images.
Common, quick uploads to websites applying faster methods such as a jpg format save time, but lose the quality of the image. Uploading original images takes ten times longer.
Compressing all images sent to them is not uncommon among some websites. Don‘t make a cardinal sin and forget to save your original photos in their initial format.
In the meantime…. what can you do to make your Internet photos appear as high quality as originals?
Actually, it is out of your hands at this point.
There are simply not enough pixels in most Internet images to allow them to print at high quality. Compress pixels in an image and you can lose the resolution, or clarity that makes the image stand out. Using the original image is the only way to ensure quality printability for your image and for your digital photo books.
