Prepping Photo Images for Disclosure in Digital Photo Books

So you’re ready to publish the first of many digital photo books. The basics of size, theme and background have been selected. Seems simple, so you begin uploading images…. With high hopes, your expectations suddenly are dashed when you notice the hated red pop-up informing you your images are substandard in quality. How can this be??

The impact digital cameras have had on the simple act of taking photographs is phenomenal. The innate skill level of the average photographer has less impact than ever before on quality of product regularly generated through digital cameras.

You might ask what it is about digital photography that sets it apart from traditional photography, creating an easy, natural transition that enables people like yourself to, with little effort, create personalized photo books for you, your family, or your friends.

Pixels are the key

  • The higher the PPI, the better resolution and quality of the printed image
  • Digital cameras create digitized images comprised of hundred of thousands of tiny pixels
  • Pixels are miniscule squares of color

The quality of internet-generated photos on you’re your computer screen generally is not impacted by what’s ordinarily the much smaller pixel dimensions used on the Internet. Plus, smaller images download much faster than larger ones when launched from websites.

A method we often use to expedite speed in uploading photos to image-hosting sites is to compress our images in a jpg format. Without compressing the pixels on the images, the time is takes to upload original photos can be increased tenfold. Disregarding any manageability and space concerns you might have with your photo book, some sites automatically compress the images you send them into smaller files.

To protect yourself, make certain before you delete pics off of your disk that you’ve saved the originals in their original format.

Once uploaded, what further steps can be taken to enhance the final product of your photo images?

About all you can do now is wait and see.

There are simply not enough pixels in most Internet images to allow them to print digital photo books at high quality. Current technology does not allow us to restore the higher resolution lost in the compression process. Returning to your original image, which you‘ve hopefully preserved, is the only means to preserve optimum printability for your photo book.
