One Portrait artist's life Story

Many artists shy away from doing portraits, preferring not even to try to capture an emotion, a mood, or a moment as it flickers across a human face. One brave, self taught artist from Marion thrives in portraiture. In a large montage called "Faces," he included an American tap dancer, an actor a scientist, the composite between three famous comedians, the traditional cast members of a long running science fiction TV series, a former TV reporter, various rock stars, athletes and entertainers, and his friends. The process starts by capturing a frame from a video, from which he gets all sorts of expressions. For a year and a half, he painted the faces of people who meant something to him, making the montage a sort of tribute.

Then he has other portraits, individual ones, of the lead singer of Babes in Toyland, a Russian gymnast, and a songwriter. His usual working tools are pencil, graphite, and charcoal. His toolbox was filled out by conte crayon and then colored pencils. His wife originally comes from Kobe, japan, and their wedding photo is what he used for his first colored pencil drawing. With it, he attempted to combine traditional American art with japanese wood block print. He drew his own version of their close up wedding photo, taken in City Hall in December 1996, with personal and Japanese symbols as an added touch. The couple's three cats, obviously not at the real wedding, are in the drawing. He used a mask from Japanese opera, believed to protect against evil spirits, as the face of one of the cats. Another cat is supposed to represent good luck, and he drew it in the proper position.

Kimonos are the outfit of the day for the couple in the drawing. He covers the drawing of his wife in the kikyo, a flower that is her matriarchal symbol. This 1997 drawing marks the first time the couple worked together. His wife takes care of all the brainstorming and testing of ideas. She said it means a lot to them. Instead of having his own exhibit, four of his pieces were featured in a book, with one as the cover. The book editor was exposed to his work after a staff member brought it to his attention. He received an email from the editor, who praised his artistic talent in combining portraiture with architecture, and weaving intelligence and humor throughout the work.
