How To Draw A Portrait
Emotions, moods, and fleeting moments are so difficult to capture on canvas that many artists avoid doing portraits. One standout, self taught portrait artist lives with his wife in a Marion home, where the living room walls are filled with portraits. With an American tap dancer, an actor a scientist, the composite between three famous comedians, the traditional cast members of a long running science fiction TV series, a former TV reporter, various rock stars, athletes and entertainers, and his friends, he created a large montage called "Faces". He does it by capturing pictures from videos, which can create really funny faces. The montage follows his personal development through the people who influenced him during the year and a half he spent painting it.
His other walls are filled with individual portraits of the lead singer from Babes in Toyland, who is a Russian gymnast and singer songwriter. His favorite tools are pencil, graphite, and charcoal. He widened his skills with conte crayon and colored pencils. For his first colored pencil drawing, he used his wedding photo, taken with his japanese wife, who is originally from Kobe. He mixed and matched American and Japanese wood block print styles. He drew his own version of their close up wedding photo, taken in City Hall in December 1996, with personal and Japanese symbols as an added touch. Thank you for reading about portrait artist commissioned and paintings.
These symbols included their three cats, which were not present at the actual wedding. The first cat's face was drawn like a Japanese opera mask, known to block evil spirits. In a position of good luck he decided to draw the second cat.
Kimonos are what the couple in the drawing is wearing. With her matriarchal symbol, a flower called the kikyo, he decorated his wife. The third cat sits behind the vertical blinds outside the room, where he placed a gingko tree. The link to the gingko, a sing of longevity, is a tree the artist once saw at the University of Iowa.
The couple partnered up for the first time with this 1997 drawing. It was his wife's job to develop and critique ideas. His wife says the drawing is one of their prizes. The artist says he would like to expand into landscapes, but he will always add people, as they are his favorite pieces to draw. Thanks for reading about paintings and visit portrait painting online for more resources.
He has achieved popular recognition for four of his pieces in a group, with one as the cover, and he feels no loss in not having an exhibit. The book editor came across the artwork upon referral by a member of the staff. Then the lady editor emailed him saying she is impressed by his self taught talent, his sense of color, shading, composition, his ability to combine portrait study with architectural elements in thought provoking and surprising ways, and the intelligence, humor and complexity behind his work. As a kid, he drew mostly action heroes and rock stars, and he has traveled far since those days. No image or even impression is too hard for him now. He decides what to draw by taking a clean photo in his head and adding or changing things as he sees fit.
