Many colleges and universities might even offer webcast orientations to help familiarize distance learning students with what they have to offer online and on campus.

Many parents these days might be among the freshmen student population. Colleges and universities reporting increased, even record, enrollments for fall 2010 attribute at least part of the growth to an adult student population. In the recession, some say, adults are taking college and university courses as part of attempts to keep their jobs or find employment, according to reports.

Still other parents are spending time on college and university campuses as well. In some instances, they're sleeping in dorms and eating in dining halls, as well as meeting with professors, a Fox news report noted. These parents are participating in parent orientations that a number of institutions throughout the country provide.

College and university orientations in some instances take place over the course of two to three days. At Northeastern University in Boston, Mass., a representative recently provided the Boston Globe with insight into the popularity of its orientation program. The parents of some 85 to 90 percent of Northeastern University students participate in these orientations, according to the Boston Globe.

These orientations for parents often require fees and include seminars. “Helicopter parents,” as a recent edition of the Tennessean referred to hovering moms and dads, might enjoy seminars intended to help them let go of their children. Parents sending their first-born off to college or experiencing “empty nest syndrome” after the youngest son or daughter leaves might have an especially difficult time when colleges and universities open their doors to students for the semester.

Parents might have concerns about issues such as safety and alcohol use on campus – areas that, along with time management – many student orientations cover. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in August published an article that provided tips for parents who want to stay involved. Matthew Winston, assistant to the president at the University of Georgia, through this publication provided advice for students as well.

Parents, as well as students, who have a hard time with the separations that go along with college and university attendance, might also make use of technology as a means of keeping in touch. In addition to mobile telephone calls and text messages, for instance, they might keep in contact and share photographs and videos on social networking programs, such as Facebook or give video call and file transfer offerings such as Skype a try.
